What makes a great artist? Is it ingenuity and innovation? Resistance and rebellion? Mastery of skill and technique? The ability to see what others might overlook?
In this online course developed by NGV specialists, you will learn about the ideas, techniques and unique circumstances that enabled some of the world’s greatest artists to rise to the fore as creative leaders of their time. While some gained widespread respect and notoriety in their own time, the work and contribution of other artists is lesser known, yet their impact equally significant.
Through close examination of ten artists especially curated from the NGV Collection, you will be able to expand upon your own art history knowledge and socio-cultural histories, while developing and refining skills in close looking, visual analysis and interpretation, and critical thinking.
