Welcome to the Gallery All Levels

The NGV is yours to discover in this art adventure. Ideal for a first time visit to the NGV, students explore the Gallery and interpret and discuss art and design from different places and times.

Artful Thinking All Levels

Think adventurously through art and design. Explore and respond to works from different times and cultures using thinking strategies and tools. This educator-led Gallery session draws upon Artful Thinking routines developed by Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Young at art Levels K-2

Inspire wonder through art and play. Immerse young learners in the magical world of art through sensory activities which focus on stories, emotions and ideas.

Artful English Levels 5-10

Nurture a love of writing. Experiment with language, develop rich descriptive vocabulary, and use art and design from different times and cultures as inspiration for creative writing. Students create a booklet of responses that can be used in the classroom to produce extended pieces of writing.

The Art of Portraiture All Levels

What’s in a portrait? What do portraits tell us about people and the times they lived in? What does the appearance of a sitter reveal about what they might be thinking or feeling? Why is it important that artists make portraits of people? View and discuss historical and contemporary portraits from across the NGV Collection.

The Art of Play Levels 9-10

Explore the Gallery, find inspiration, get creative and have fun. Challenge students to work together to draw, describe, perform, create and curate.

19th Century to Now Levels 10-12

How has art changed since the nineteenth century? What are the key characteristics of different movements and styles, and what ideas and events have influenced these? Students explore these questions and more in an educator-led Gallery session.

Write About Art Levels 7-12

Creative ways to analyse, interpret and describe art. Following a presentation that introduces strategies for writing about art, students take inspiration from works on display and create rich, descriptive writing during a practical session in the Gallery.

The Ancient World Levels 3-10

Step back in time to learn about the Ancient World. Discover how artworks can provide clues about the everyday life of past civilisations. Develop knowledge of the ideas and beliefs that shaped the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome.

Explore Medieval Europe and the Italian Renaissance, and discuss how art reflects the social and cultural changes and artistic innovation from its time.

All About Design Levels 3-12

What is design? What do designers do? Explore how designers solve problems, present possibilities, tell stories, reflect their time and imagine the future. Discover design as a process and a way of thinking that helps to shape the world we live in.

Toy Takedown Design Challenge Levels 5-12

What makes a sustainable toy design? Work in a team to surgically disassemble a toy, reducing it to its constituent parts. Learn about design processes and production, materials and components, product life cycles and sustainability. Redesign the toy and reuse the components to make a new product. This program includes an educator-led gallery session to see design concepts in action in the NGV Collection.

Fabulous Food Design Challenge Levels 3-10

From fancy forks to pots for tea, the NGV collection is bursting with food utensils and vessels from different times and places. What are they made from? How were they used? What can we learn from them? Following a gallery tour, respond to a design brief and design a new utensil or vessel for a futuristic feast in a studio workshop.

Art House Architecture Design Challenge Levels 6-12

Be the architect. The annual NGV Architecture Commission asks architects to consider innovative ways to activate the NGV’s Grollo Equiset Garden with a thought-provoking work of temporary architecture. In this workshop, students use tools and techniques for idea generation and rapid prototyping to create their own response to the same brief. The program includes a gallery session with a viewing of the competition winning design.

Practice applying the Analytical Frameworks – Structural, Personal, Cultural and Contemporary – out of the classroom. Discuss, analyse and interpret original works and objects from the NGV Collection.

VCE Literature Levels 10, VCE

Analysing literary criticism, or reading a text through a different lens, can be a daunting place to start unpacking literary perspectives. Students are supported to advance their understanding of critical theory through visual analysis of NGV Collection works from a range of historical, cultural and contemporary contexts.

Learn, revise and articulate the principles of visual perception. Use original artworks to identify and describe gestalt principles, pictorial depth cues, constancies and optical illusion. Find out how artists manipulate visual perception to inform our experience and understanding of art.

How does art and design reflects human relationships with the Australian environment? Compare and contrast Indigenous and non-Indigenous views of the landscape. What do representations of the land reveal about how the landscape has been understood throughout history?

VCE Philosophy Levels 10, VCE

Debate problems in value theory with a focus on themes and questions from the VCE Philosophy Study Design.

On aesthetic value: What is art? What is beauty? What is the purpose and value of art? To what extent is a society justified in censoring art?
On the interpretation of works of art: What is the relationship between art and philosophy? What is the relationship between the meaning of a work and the intentions of its artist?

IB Theory of Knowledge Levels 10, IB

How do you know? What is the nature of knowledge in the visual arts? Reflect on the significance of shared and personal knowledge, to both the artist and viewer, when making knowledge claims about visual art. Consider how the senses, imagination, reason, emotion, language, intuition, memory and faith inform the way artists create art, and how viewers respond to and interpret art.

Plan your visit

To prepare for your booking, please note the following:

  • Bookings are essential for all school and student groups
  • Bookings must be made at least 4 weeks in advance of visit
  • All programs are presented by experienced educators
    Chinese translation available on request (at additional cost, confirmed at time of booking)
  • A teacher or adult accompanying your group is also welcome to translate during the visit

Terms and Conditions

Please note the following terms and conditions prior to booking:

  • All bookings are confirmed at time of booking. Tentative bookings are not accepted
  • Invoices will be issued by NGV prior to visit. Payment must be paid at least one week prior to the visit
  • Requests to amend confirmed booking details (such as change to participant numbers), must be made by email at least 14 days prior to visit.
  • Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments.
  • No refund for variance in student number during visit
  • Students must be supervised at all times by a teacher or adult
